Change Your Clock, Change Your Life

Sunday, November 1st at 2am marks the 2020 change in daylight savings. That means that most of us will be moving our clocks one hour earlier (except for Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Arizona, American Samoa and Guam— did you know these areas do not participate?) This change also means that schedules will be interrupted, kids’ and pets’ sleep patterns will need to adjust, and it will likely be dark before our workday is over.

Depending on where you live, Sunday might also be a reminder that winter is coming. Our days will start to feel shorter and perhaps colder. For many people, this shift is challenging. The change in season can affect our mental health and overall attitudes. Frankly it’s a bummer to say goodbye to sunshine, flip flops and outdoor activities, especially for those of us in states where a significant shift in weather is coming. Whereas the “spring ahead” to daylight savings in the spring tends to bring a sense of hope and light, the “fall back” tradition sometimes comes with opposite feelings.

What if this is not the case for you in 2020? What if there are certain patterns, routines, and habits you’d like to switch up? For example:

  • What if you’ve always wanted to be the person who gets up one hour earlier to start your day with a work out?

  • What if you were able to quietly meditate before the sun or the kids were up?

  • What if you had time to make a healthy breakfast rather than rushing to your first work meeting with no time to spare?

  • What if you finally became the person who walks the dog every single morning before the rest of the neighborhood has had their morning coffee?

Think about your morning routine. Is it ideal for you? Has Covid shifted your patterns to be more healthy or less healthy? Do you need to make a change or create some new habits to end 2020 with better sleep, improved mental health, and a step closer to being the hero of your own life?

When you go to sleep on Saturday night, consider that Sunday morning is not a setback but instead a Reset. We can’t control a lot of what happens around us as we go about our days, especially this year, but we can certainly decide how we kick off each morning. Change your clocks = change your routine.
